In the last few years, it seems that true crime stories have had such an influx of fascination and intrigue from movie watchers. We as a society seem to like delving into the lives of others’ crimes, because often, they are some of the most outrageous and unimaginable crimes ever possibly thought of. One such case, as presented in Netflix’s newest documentary The Crash (directed by Gareth Johnson) presents a case that has many layers of toxic relationships, ending with one car crash that would change the life of three individuals and their families.

Back in 2022, a young woman named Mackenzie Shirilla was involved in a car crash that injured her and killed her boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan. Surviving this crash has a deep impact on Shirilla who wishes it wouldn’t have happened and wants to communicate all of her apologies to Dominic. However, as an investigation looms into the car crash, more and more of the actual crash just didn’t seem to add up for investigators. The documentary flashes back to the history of Shirilla and Russo. They seemed like a normal couple, but underneath that, there was much more of a complicated relationship. Both were very much, as presented in the film, part of a very toxic relationship. Both Russo and Shirilla would be victims to each other’s constant “at odds,” leading to many fights and many break-up attempts.

Back to the main investigation where experts believe the car crash just didn’t happen and Shirilla had something to do with it. After all, how could she have perfectly survived, but two others died? The documentary dives not only into the camera footage of the crash and all that lead to it, but Shirilla’s own social media presence. Social media will get you!

I really liked this documentary. I’m a fan of true crime and a fan of modern true crime that happened within recent memory. I had no idea of this story, so learning of it I myself got to dive deeper into things and form my own opinion. The jail interviews with Shirilla adds a whole other level of the confusion this case brings about, especially when she drops her own bombshell about what she thinks happened that night. After watching this, questions still arise and confusion is still rampant with that fatal car crash.

Christian Ramos is a classic film fan, having had the dream to host Turner Classic Movies for years now. He also has a large amount of Oscar trivia in his head, remembers dressing as Groucho Marx one Halloween, and cherishes the moment Julianne Moore liked his tweet.
