I have a fear of airplanes. Like so many out there, just the idea of sitting in a very cramped room, tens of thousands of feet in the sky is just something so outlandish, I just hate flying. I also feel it’s an inconvenience, as I’ve not experienced the best of flights since COVID. Think about my fear if I ever were to cross the ocean and heaven forbid, something happens. Something like the events of Deep Water (directed by Renny Harlin) that are so shocking and terrifying, I needed an air sickness bag watching the movie!
On board a flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai, a group of passengers from various backgrounds gather together in what they can only assume will be a buy-the-book flight. First officer Ben (Aaron Eckhart) and Captain Rich (Ben Kingsley) are prepared for anything, working well together. Passenger Dan (Angus Sampson) however, sets off a series of events that will lead to disaster. On top of the cigarettes he sneaks into the plane, he also packs a lithium-power bank in his luggage, which in the flying world, is a big no-no. This hidden battery pack explodes in mid-air creating a fire that is too powerful to put out and puts every single passenger at risk. Ben and Rich brace the plane for the nearest airport, but with time running out, they have no choice but to crash the plane in the ocean. Soon, the plane is scattered into pieces with multiple fatalities and a scattering of survivors across a wide range of the Pacific.
Matters of course, get even more worse for the survivors as the waters around them are swimming with sharks. And these sharks are hungry! A young survivor, Finn (Elijah Tamati)is trapped underwater in an airpocket, trying to reach his sister Cora (Molly Belle Wright) who sticks with Ben in order to stay clear of any shark activities.

Deep Water is a fun movie. It left me shocked that a very simple movie about a plane crash in the ocean with some sharks could actually be sad. Lots of people go through hell and back in this movie, and it leads to some pretty terrifying moments. There’s of course, one beautiful blink and you’ll miss it homage to Jaws. Eckhart is the American version of Gerard Butler in these disaster type movies made for a cheap buck, but filled with a lot of action packed moments! Just remind me not to schedule any ocean trips soon!
