[Rating: Solid Rock First Up]

Having a cell phone in my hand most nights, scrolling through Tik Tok, I often will get scary videos that have kept me up at night! One such, are the stories of the Backrooms, a creation from Kane Parsons, a YouTuber and director who under the age of 21 is about to make a huge step in Hollywood. His nightmare never ending rooms will keep even the bravest explorers up at night.
Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a struggling furniture store owner, down on his luck and recently divorced. He meets with his therapist Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), who suffers from her own past traumas that haunt her own nightmares. Clark’s store frequently has issues with the electricity bill being high despite lights flickering. Clark sleeps in the store and soon discovers the electrical issues are something more…sinister.
Clark discovers a passageway in the wall that leads to a mysterious room. That room has piles of furniture and rooms beyond rooms. Clark soon leads himself though the rooms, with no knowing of where he is going or what could be lurking in each room. Soon, Clark finds his way out of the rooms when a mysterious figure chases him back to his own furniture store. Clark soon tells Mary of his discovery, only to be rebuffed by her. He soon recruits his assistant manager Kat (Lukita Maxwell) and her boyfriend, videographer Bobby (Finn Bennett) to join him in the backrooms to prove he isn’t going insane. However, inside, the trio are stalked by the same mysterious force leading to their disappearance. Soon, Mary, curious as to the whereabouts of her missing client, must face her own trauma and fears and journey into the backrooms.

May 2026 is the summer of scares. On top of Obsession, Backrooms is yet another scary as hell movie that is frightening to watch. I felt a sense of dread and claustrophobia throughout watching this. Parson and cinematographer Jeremy Cox create a world that is so minimal and yet so terrifying that the entire theater must have been locked in because you could hear a pin drop. It is so surprising that Parsons is only a young man because his direction of creating a maze of horror is already, in my mind, one of the most brilliant up and coming directors.
