No Data from the Star Trek films? Or Yul Brynner's Gunslinger from Westworld?

I actually liked A.I. for the most part. There were certainly sections that could have been either toned down or skipped altogether, but it was entertaining none the less.

Cool list!

Look at that face, Johnny 5. It's ever-so-obviously Johnny 5, too, given the lack of expressiveness in his eyes and almost completely different shape. Good job on putting WALL-E on the list, but wow has someone ever bought into a stereotype perpetrated by the ignorant.

I think ultimately the tonal shifts in "A.I." are are a result of Spielberg trying to put his own stamp on what otherwise is a very Kubrickian movie in terms of mood, etc. I agree that some of it (especially the computer with Robin Williams' voice) is really bad, but overall, I think that Spielberg's tendencies play right into the overarching sadness of the film (including Teddy and the ending) and end up making the story even more tragic.

P.S. - In addition to the noticable shifts, A.I. was soooo hypersentimental! They were just pushing all of the well-worn "buttons" - over, and over... and over - which is not always a terrible thing in the right context (genre films), but when a film is professing to be intellectual and profound, I find it a little insulting, honestly. (Sorry Melin!)

Thank you, Eric C! - I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only one, too. So, does "synthaziod" count? I hope so!

Cleavy - Thank You!
I was beginning to think I was the only one who HATED A.I. I'm a sci-fi fan but damn. I loved how there were clear shifts to completely Spielberg scenes. Crap, crap, crap, Spielberg, crap, Spielberg.

Bishop (didn't they call him a synthaziod? don't remeber.)
is far cooler than David just for the knife trick.

Cool list Melin! Though, I HATED A.I. - but, I think we've had that discussion before. In my opinion, it's in the same category as the Matrix, laymen's philosophy masquerading as profound.

I know you mentioned Ash, but, what about Bishop from Aliens and Alien3 - not sure where he fits into this cyborg/android/robot argument - but he's (it's?) pretty sweet.

Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) in Blade Runner. Possibly Bender from Futurama if you want to get technical. Furthermore, android is the correct term for a masculine robot and gynoid is the term for a feminine robot. Sweet!

James H.,
As I mentioned,"Nit Picking" but a broader definition of Cyborg is any creature that merges organic tissue with artificial devices (I know... very broad definition Captian Hook & Grandma with her hearing aid) Also, Eric Melin called T-800 a cyborg in this list & Kyle Reese calls the T-800 a cyborg in the movie. T-800 with all the flesh burned away...super cool robot.

Just checked my 1986 (2 years after The Terminator) Webster's Dictionary, it has your definition James H.
