Actually, it wasn't Jon Stewart whose idea it was to bring Marketa Irglova back to the stage to make her speech. It was Gil Cates, the producer of the show. HE cued Conti and the orchestra to play at that 46-sec (?) mark, thus cutting the poor girl off as she started to speak. He felt so bad about it that he told Jon to go backstage and get her. I think they should have 60 secs, not just that 45 or 46 secs. Geez, this is an ACHIEVEMENT!

Jon Stewart really made the night worth it and kudos to you both for picking these particular moments. I do have to add that I did love the fact there were so many newcomers who received well deserved awards and their stunned speeches were delivered with the excitement that felt genuine. My favorite of favorite parts, and the part that made those around me 'aw' in our sunday best, was that moment on JD's #1 spot. The chivalry made us melt and the speech left us lifted. (yes, i know that sounds cheesy but sometimes it's just true.)

Well done, boys. I think the media is talking about the ratings so much because they don't know how else to report on anything. A bigger, more important headline could easily have been, "Foreigners sweep acting awards." Not to mention all the other accents we heard throughout the night.

On the whole, I found the "entertainment" kind of weak, but deserving winners giving superb acceptance speeches easily makes up for any faults in the show.

I did a running diary of the event and it can be found here:

...if you're not Oscared out already.
