What NO LESS THAN ZERO? Just kidding, but KALIFORNIA would probably make my list- maybe it veers a little more into straight horror, but Juliet Lewis' character certainly falls into the alienated youth category.

You know, one film that might cover alienation is WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE. Although it's quirky, Gilbert certainly deals with alienation, what with his stagnant job, his mentally retarded brother ( a pre-TITANIC Leonardo DiCaprio), and his house-bound, morbidly obese mother. Speaking of DiCaprio, his BASKETBALL DIARIES would make the cut, too. If being a drug-addled basketball star isn't alienating, I don't know what is! Oh, one more that you may not have thought of (or heard of), is MELODY, a 1971 British flick about alienated . . . pre-teens! Mark Lester and Tracy Hyde are the sixth graders who want to get married against the protests of their uncaring parents and teachers. To be fair, it's more of a generation gap movie, a bit dewy-eyed at times, but charming in it's innocence. Gosh, this has got other movies coming to mind . . . MY BODYGUARD, A LITTLE ROMANCE, THE BOY WHO COULD FLY, all that deal with alienation in one way or another.

Another Van Sant pic that should be considered is Elephant. I thought his look at the school shooting epidemic that seems to be growing in our culture was a lot like Kids. Not really enjoyable to watch on a certain level, but riveting in it's execution. The slow build into that frantic violent ending is as good a look inside the heads of these troubled kids as I think I have ever seen. He doesn't take the easy way out and portray the kids as the pure evil caricature that we usually get from the news media in the aftermath of these events. Instead he makes their school experience seem very real and what most of us would consider normal. This makes the final actions of his characters all the more shocking and yet, somehow, understandable at the same time. It's also a movie I'm happy I've seen, and never want to watch again. What a downer!

Badlands is one of my favourite movies. Have you ever seen the telemovie version called Starkweather with Tim Roth and Faruza Balk, a lot more grittier, but Mellick's version is still great. I've been discussing Bonnie and Clyde lately, having just read Public Enemies by Bryan Burroughs, He paints them far more stinky, grungier and desperate, sleeping in fields and abandoned houses, Bonnie enduring great pain afraid to go to a hospital after she got burned in a car accident. It's worth a relook at Bonnie and Clyde for this era. Ironically, Burroughs whilst criticising the movie for glamourizing them and that they deserve to be only be a footnote in crime history; his descriptions of them are compellingly filmic.
