The directing debut of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, The Way, Way Back is a charming coming-of-age film that overcomes a lot of pitfalls of the genre because its protagonist is so beautifully inexpressive and uncomfortable to begin with that when he finally does make the small strides needed to come out of his shell, it feels like a huge triumph.


The Greek mythology action movie Immortals and George Clooney’s The Descendants grossed about $80 million each at the box office. Both are new out on Blu-ray and DVD.


Trey Hock’s take on the best films of 2011 shows that even in a bad year for film there can be at least 10 standout motion pictures.

Before I started tallying up the movies that made the biggest impression this year, I thought it may have been a weak year for film. It turns out I was dead wrong. Although only one film this year made my hair stand up on end, there were plenty of moving, adventurous, and original films in 2011.
