Robert Downey Jr.’s new cinematic vehicle, gives the viewer just enough salt, just enough of the bile of family life, in an attempt to cover the overly manipulative and sentimental story. In spite of a remarkable cast, and a handful of exceptional moments, The Judge falls prey to the emotional wish fulfillment of most estranged father and son stories.

Tom Cruise’s ‘Jack Reacher’ is a well-plotted mystery thriller filled with tough-guy talk, a simmering romance, and exciting action. But along the way to becoming the fun, disposable piece of Hollywood trash that it is, it has a scene or two that may turn the stomachs of those still reeling from the tragic school shooting last week.

Kicking and Screaming wasn’t really a big hit when it came out in 2005. Maybe its because its number-one goal was to showcase its star verbally and physically abusing kids. Kicking and Screaming may be overlooked, but it deserves a fair shake — at least partially because it’s the kind of movie aimed at kids that adults [...]

Out on DVD and Blu-ray this week is ‘Drive,’ one of the best and most surprising movies of 2011, and ‘To Kill A Mockingbird,’ digitally remastered and fully restored from its original 35mm film in a 50th Anniversary presentation.

I am still happy with my Top 10 Movies as Good or Better Than Books They’re Based On, but #25 “To Kill a Mockingbird” could definitely make the revision. Harper Lee’s novel may be a mainstay of high school reading lists as well as a few banned book lists, but this beloved novel comes to life in director Robert Mulligan’s able hands.
