The sheer number of creative ways in which writer/director Jeffrey McHale uses footage for this retrospective movie documentary makes it the new gold standard of the genre, taking a movie you’re likely already biased against and leaving you feeling like you might just love it.
The Kansas City Art Institute and Alamo Drafthouse have joined forces to bring you Film School, a weekly student curated film series. This week – Total Recall (1990) – Saturday, April 20th at 3 p.m.
Even though Total Recall is full of imaginative sets and design, its futuristic world is never anything but a nifty-looking backdrop for its action sequences, which are admittedly better than average. But the world never really informs the characters – whose dialogue is also pretty bland – and the result is a little underwhelming.
