The espionage thriller gets an update with the release of The East. And let’s face it, born largely out of the Cold War; the espionage thriller needed a facelift. Pitting spy against spy and super power against super power just doesn’t work as anything other than a historical document or relic of the not-so-distant past.

The overall result of ‘To Rome with Love’ is a funny film whose contrivances make no excuses for themselves, and whose jokes have a substance that a viewer could ponder for sometime after leaving the theatre.

‘Hard Candy’ is one of those intimate low-budget movie concepts that is so brilliant you can’t help wishing you had thought of it first. What makes the movie more than a great concept, though, is the sure-handed and stylish direction, some whip-smart dialogue, and a towering performance by a then-young newcomer named Ellen Page.
