Eric and guest critic Trevan McGee from inkkc.com battle it out over “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” a big Oscar prestige film starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, adapted from the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, and directed by David Fincher. Will it be the big contender for Best Picture at the Academy Awards that everyone predicts it will be or is it an overly long snorefest? Check out the instant on-camera review for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

I did like this movie, but it introduces nothing new. It borrows much from other films, yet, it’s extremely well directed and well cast.

I felt like I was watching Forrest Gump again. Neutral central character amid interesting people and amazing events. Eric Roth needs to mix things up. I did enjoy seeing the “old man” baby. But I don’t think they showed the last stages of life (dementia riddled toddler, etc) very well. The montage of this was a bit of a cop out. But I thought much of the movie was like that…too conveniently packaged. And no relation to the F.Scott Fitzgerald story. Entertaining, sappy, and visually nice. But no Oscar contender. Then again, Oscar ain’t what he used to be.

Not a great film, didn’t do the concept justice. It was too panoramic, not enough substance, the performances were disappointing!

CCBB – extraordinary man/ordianary circumstances Forrest Gump – ordinary man/extraordinary circumstances, in some aspect.

Well said Kenny.

I actually liked this movie…I was very moved by it, though I thought brad didn’t convey the development of a person from youth through adulthoodand, and then old-age with enough depth. He should’ve CHANGED more, just as normal people do when we…grow up. The performance was very one-note.

Cate Blanchett was amazing on the other hand. She felt authentic and accurate at every age.

The ending was heartbreaking. I cried.

Too long of a story for even a 3 hour film, poor character development, misplaced historical events, and a Gump-like story – just replace the floating feather with a ridiculous hummingbird

I wanted to like this movie, but it was disappointing in most aspects… especially the last montage of the film… Seriously? That’s it?!?

I’m really glad you mentioned the hummingbird. I’ve been raked over the coals for comparing this movie to Gump on YouTube. Fact is: same screenwriter, same attitude, same devices.

The main reason why I liked the film was based on how visually appealing it is. I found myself interested in each character, yet vitually knowing what would happen to everyone in the end. The Gump correlations are obvious, but it’s nice to see a somewhat different take on it. The film really leaves you wondering what if, more than personally reacting to it. It may sound like I really don’t like this film, but overall it’s a good film and I do not think it was a waste of my time. However, regarding Oscar nominations, I don’t believe it’s anything close to deserving a Best Picture award.

I’m going to have to go with Trevan on this one. I agree it was definitely Gump-LIKE, but in my mind that makes it a good movie. It was one of the first things i said walking out at the end. I have a small bias being that Fincher is definitely one of my favorite directors (because of his eye for cinematography) but i think you might be a little cynical on this one Eric. I mean you gave the same ranking to Yes Man. Either way, you are definitely not in the minority with disliking this film.

much love,
Josh
