This French thriller borders on the absurd, quite like the Coen brothers “Fargo,” one of my favorite movies of all time. The first time I saw “Fargo,” like “Harry,” I didn’t know whether to laugh or be horrified.
Director Dominik Moll does a fantastic service to this international hit by letting the events unfold completely devoid of any editorial opinion. I’ve read a lot of comparisons to Hitchcock, and those comments are truly not far off. The action unfolds at a slow, classic movie pace, not the current MTV-style blitzkrieg that current audiences have become accustomed to. So when the characters get deeper and deeper into the far-out plot developments, it actually means something.
Sergi Lopez is terrific as Harry, and brings a believable human quality to a character that could have been a cartoon in lesser hands. “With A Friend Like Harry…” is very weird, very funny, and a very statisfying psychological thriller that explores familiar dark territory with a modern twist.
