DVD Review: Love & Other Drugs and Four Lions

Here’s my review of the new Blu-ray/DVD releases “Love and Other Drugs” and “Four Lions” from KTKA-49.

New out on DVD and Blu-ray is “Love and Other Drugs,” a not-quite-funny romantic dramedy starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a slimy-yet-charming salesman for big pharma and Anne Hathaway as a free-thinking artist with early onset Parkinson’s.

The movie has lots of scenes of the two leads in bed together, but it can’t decide whether it’s a big issue film, a romantic comedy or a weepy melodrama, so it ends up being none of them successfully.

“Four Lions,” on the other hand—out this week—is a biting, laugh-out-loud funny satire that dares to poke fun at Jihadi terrorists. The guys who populate this movie aren’t what you would describe as criminal masterminds.

Plainly put, unwavering fanaticism is dangerous and stupid. These dimwits are constantly leading themselves into trouble, until the end of the movie has one of the wannabe terrorists running around frantically in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume that hides a bomb.

The behind the scenes segments and deleted scenes give a more rounded perspective on one of the blackest, funniest comedies in recent memory.

I saw this movie last night and I was not sure what to expect. It started out slow, but picked up in the middle, and had a great ending. I was glad to see Jakes character turned around at the end, and Anne’s character finally let him love her unconditionally. I especially liked seeing this in HD without having to go out and rent. My DISH Network PPV allows me to rent without having monthly fees and I can get it in HD 1080p with an internet connection.
