The Scene-Stealers Movie Podcast 78: Critics Vs. Oscars Panel

We’re doing something a little different with this week’s podcast. Eric took part in a Critics Vs. Oscars panel along with several other Kansas City film critics and we’ve got the entire discussion here. Hosted by the always great Brian McTavish, the panel featured local critics such as Bob Butler, Shawn Edwards, our friend Ryan Davis from LostInReviews.com (now doing great stuff with The Alamo Drafthouse), and many more. The critics all make Oscar predictions and Eric makes his feelings on Les Miserables perfectly known.

Check out our reviews Friday for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Quartet.

Full list of panelists: Kansas City Library Movie Editor Robert Butler; WDAF-TV Fox 4 Film Critics Shawn Edwards and Russ Simmons; Kansas City Star Contributing Movie Reviewer Jon Niccum; Scene-Stealers/KCTV5/Lawrence.com film critic Eric Melin, Lost in Reviews editor Ryan Davis; freelance entertainment reviewer Marie Asner; Dustin Adair and Molly Montgomery of Reviews For Humans; Jack Poessiger of “Jack Goes to the Movies” on Time Warner Cable; and Dan Lybarger from the Arkansas Democrat- Gazette.

Yeah, I’m a little excitable, huh? I prefer the term “passionate” though. Ha!

Don’t worry I absolutely needed that at certain points with people lavishing over Argo. I was even more negative than you on it.
There were definitely some badly thought out/downright stupid statements made like Tarantino is a bad writer. Animation is just cartoons. I mean I’m not a fan of Wes Anderson and I don’t like a lot of what he does but I’d never say he’s an outright bad writer, its almost not empirically true at a certain point.
The animation one also annoyed me. If you are going to call yourself a critic you really can’t dismiss entire genres on their face and be so reductionary about them. Sure some genres/styles may more often yield better movies but that doesn’t mean any are invalid or are not worth your time, especially as a critic.

…unless you’re trying to be a contrarian for the sake of it. Yep.

Man it was really hard for me to hear everyone rag on the animated features. Animation is still film, and it requires more thought and work than recorded film, It’s a shame that people dismiss it so readily. I agree with you though Eric, Wreck-it-Ralph will probably win even though Paranorman should. Although It sounds like you have your own issues to deal with regarding Argo

Topher,

I think you’ll find that Eric and everyone here at Scene Stealers would agree with you. Animation is a film, and deserves to be treated with respect.

I DO have issues with ‘Argo.’ The amount of praise it gets sometimes gets my blood boiling. For me, I’m renaming it “Aggro.”
