Renner gets my pick, but I haven’t seen _Invictus_ or _A Simple Man_.

Bridges does a great job in _Crazy Heart_, but it was only last year that saw Mickey Rourke pretty much play the same role applied to a different line of work in _The Wrestler_. Rourke did a better job than Bridges, but it still wasn’t enough to win an Oscar. Also, it doesn’t help that Robert Duvall is in the movie to remind us of when he played a similar role in _Tender Mercies_.

Portraying a unique character isn’t necessarily a prerequisite for winning Best Actor, it helps.
