Though Trey may have been more excited about a couple of films from 2011, he thought 2012 was a far more consistent year when it came to great filmmaking. So get ready for an overstuffed Top 10 Films of 2012.

It can be argued that his most mainstream work represents either his best or worst tendencies, but going back through Spielberg films from the 1970s on, I found that two of Spielberg’s best pictures were the ones that were ignored or misunderstood by mainstream audiences. The rest were pretty much hits, although not all are as adored as some that didn’t make my list.

So we had a hell of a storm last week: one of the biggest, and most destructive in recent memory, at least for the region hardest hit. Indeed, it was the kind of squall that usually serves as the backdrop to some hellacious cinematic set piece, one where the picture’s heroes must navigate the pitfalls of the gods and men alike.

Surely when one thinks of great time-travel movies, a couple jump to mind immediately. Of course, I’m talking about Hot Tub Time Machine and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, so I’m sad to say they have been left off of this Top 10 and are relegated only to the opening remarks section here.

If the world does indeed decide to up and end due to the Rapture, rogue asteroid, super volcano or just a planet that comes out of nowhere (thanks for showing me the light, Lars Von Trier) – I hope they show movies in the afterlife, because that’s the only way I’m going to be able to see the top films on this list:
