What are the 2012 Oscar nominations? Also left out was Michael Shannon, Michael Fassbender Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton, and Albert Brooks. Rooney Mara was a bit of an upset, taking Swinton’s spot, while Melissa McCarthy took Shailene Woodley’s from “The Descendants,” and Max Von Sydow took Brooks’ nomination for “Drive.” Demian Bechir for “A Better Life” and Gary Oldman for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” each earned their first Oscar nominations.

There is so much to be angry about this year, real steel getting a nomination and harry potter and transformers for doing the same thing they’ve been doing for x number of films but no Tree of Life (who said visual effects had to be cg), tilda swinton getting pushed out, fassbender and gosling not appearing, shailene woodley and albert brooks absent from supporting, warhorse and extremely loud and incredibly close getting best picture nominations.
There are only a couple of things and that’s Tree of Life making picture and director and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy for Oldman, Score and Screenplay

sorry a couple of things that I was happy about

Yeah, Xavier–overall, these were mostly some pretty safe picks. Anything edgy like ‘Drive,’ ‘Melancholia,’ ‘Take Shelter,’ ‘Shame,’ or ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ were either shut out completely or edged out (‘Drive’ got one for sound…)

yeah the picks are so boring, especially given that most of the “safe” movies this year were average to awful (see the artist, moneyball, my week with marilyn, the help, extremely loud and incredibly close and warhorse)

You know, call me in the minority, but I really liked “The Artist” and I hope it wins Best Picture! It surely is better than most of the other nominations that’s for sure. But then again, I’m a sucker for those kind of movies. Can’t believe “Extremely Loud” got nominated over “Drive” or “Tinker, Tailor”. 😛

That smily face was meant to be a disappointing face. But I think you got that.

Will- I dug ‘The Artist’ too, but it didn’t even make my Top 10. It’s a well put-together feel-good picture built on a clever premise with charming performances, for sure. But it does have a pretty lackluster third act (until the final dance number), and its totally formulaic and light as a feather. There is more compelling, layered storytelling going on in almost half of the other Oscar nominees this year (specifically ‘Tree of life,’ ‘Hugo,’ ‘Descendants,’ and ‘Moneyball.’). ‘The artist’ would be my fifth choice in that category…
