James Cameron's Avatar = Disney's Pocahontas

James Cameron’s Avatar is Disney’s Pocahontas?

Avatar = Pocahontas (below)

avatar = pocahontas

Well, we all know the similarities between “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Forrest Gump,” but what about the latest record-breaking 3D epic from James Cameron?

I thought it was the sci-fi version of “Dances With Wolves” (or maybe “FernGully: The Last Rainforest”) but Matt Bateman makes a pretty good argument for James Cameron’s “Avatar” actually being the same film as Disney’s “Pocahontas.”

this is interesting because its exactly what I’ve said to people who asked what it was about, the script was so predictable and boring with some of the cheesiest dialogue I’ve ever heard, but it’s ok he only started working on it what over ten years ago?

That’s fantastic…so much so that I seriously have to wonder if/how, at some point during the creative process, Cameron didn’t utter the words: “I’m going to remake Pocahontas with 10-foot tall blue natives on another planet.”

oh ok so he stole the ridiculous name from someone else, that makes it much better, whether he made it up or not does not change how stupid it is. Why do I care about Avatar, because it was the most overhyped, overrated and boring film I saw this year. If you don’t agree this site is all for reasonable discussion so without resorting to petty assumptions and employment you have no knowledge of, feel free to defend the film (without mentioning more than the visuals which were by and large impressive)

Yes, I did in fact watch Pocahontas and decide, this would be the best movie ever… if only I had ten foot tall blue humanoids on another planet. But, I had to spend these many years making sure I made just enough changes to the plot so that I couldn’t be charged with outright theft. But anyways, I just made another billion dollar movie… so who cares right. You are eating this up, all because I made sure that my name was all over every advertisement and poster out there. I had to make sure that it was mentioned that I, the director of Titanic and Aliens, was the director of this film. And you morons are running to the theaters like there is no tomorrow, and some of you keep coming back, despite the fact that this is Pocahontas 2.0. Thanks for the money. My legacy is secure.

Yes, I’ve been watching this movie twice so far, and I enjoyed it.
Besides this movie is the best of the last year and it’s gonna win the Oscar for best movie.
People like you JamesCameron just want to buck the trend. But go and get a life instead, please!
Why are you concerned with this movie if you don’t like it anyway?

For all its broad strokes and mythic tenets, I liked the film. But because of all the hype surrounding it being a breakthrough movie and all that (most of it originating with Cameron), it’s absolutely fair play to call it out for its derivitiveness.

Yeahhhh but I haven’t seen where he said the story was a game changer or the story was going to be the breakthrough.

Studios are already re-evaluating what flicks on their plates are gonna/should be 3d. You will see a ton of 3D because of this.

More than the 3D I think his “performance capture” technology is the real breakthrough…I’ll give him that.

Anyway…isn’t Avatar just a combo of all the films he’s done already?

Yes, I agree, and I agree.

Not sure this is a combo of other films he’s done, but he’s certainly broadened his epic scope even more now. The Terminator world was never this detailed or clearly defined. Now he’s got two more movies to play around with Pandora…

Once again, James Cameron has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $300 million, wisely.

“Avatar” is simply sensational entertainment and a technical breakthrough. It contains such visual detailing that it would reward repeating viewings. It invents a new language, Na’vi, as “Lord of the Rings” did. It creates new movie stars. It is an Event, one of those films you feel you must see to keep up with the conversation.

Like “Star Wars” and “LOTR,” “Avatar” employs a new generation of special effects. Cameron said it would, and many doubted him. It does. Pandora is very largely CGI. The Na’vi are embodied through motion capture techniques, convincingly. They look like specific, persuasive individuals and Cameron and his artists succeed at the difficult challenge of making Neytiri a blue-skinned giantess with golden eyes and a long, supple tail, and sexy.

The movie contains so much. The human stories. The Na’vi stories, for the Na’vi are also developed as individuals. The complexity of the planet, which harbors a global secret. The ultimate warfare, with Jake joining the resistance against his former comrades. Small graceful details like a floating creature that looks like a cross between a blowing dandelion seed and a drifting jellyfish, and embodies goodness. Or astonishing floating cloud-islands. Quite a bit more complex that Pocahontas!

Cameron promised he’d unveil the next generation of 3-D in “Avatar.” Cameron’s iteration is the best I’ve seen — and more importantly, one of the most carefully-employed. The film never uses 3-D simply because it has it, and doesn’t promiscuously violate the fourth wall. He also seems quite aware of 3-D’s weakness for dimming the picture, and even with a film set largely in interiors and a rain forest, there’s sufficient light. I saw the film in IMAX 3-D at the AMC Woodlands 20 and was BLOWN AWAY.

It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected.

Hey, all the Avatar supporters here don’t seem to negate the argument about similarity of its script with Pocahontas. I’ve haven’t seen either of the movies but the facts presented here are very interesting and more so given the hype about avatar and it’s story. I would like those who have seen both the movies to comment on this.

Very few stories are totally “new” as man has been around long enough that some things do get barrowed. This story covers a basic premise as did Pocahontas. Oddly enough the story and history don’t match as THE John Smith was saved NOT because she loved him (married and went to England with another John and sadly died there) but because she realized that it would cause a conflict that could have disastrous consequences for her tribe.

Avatar is indeed pretty much the same as Pocahontas, except for the ending. The two cultures didn’t resolve any differences; the Navi spanked the jarhead marines all the way back to Camp Lejeune, where they will presumably regroup for Operation Pandora Storm, obliterating all life on the planet and then helping themselves to all the planet’s Unbelievium. Unless one former marine can de-avatar himself and infiltrate their ranks, then reprogram a T-1000 robot to be on their side, and take a deep sea submersible vehicle down to explore the wreckage of the long-sunken cruise ship Ginormic…. after kicking the egg-laying Mother Alien out the airlock into space. Don’t miss Avatar II: Electric Boogaloo (in theaters Summer 2011).

Ok for all the people saying that Avatar is like Pocahontas, here’s the thing (And yes I’ve seen both). Ok Pocahontas is for when we were kids….plus Disney movie don’t change people’s lives for make them think differently. Avatar did just that, James Cameron makes movies that we can all relate to in out time, things that have happened or could happen (look at Terminator and what it has done to everyone today). Avatar does the same thing where we can relate and be reminded of the evil that is among all of us. Ok also “unobtainium” is a real world and I think it was a great word to pick because if you people that have never looked at a periodic table would actually look at the names you would see how rediculous we make a lot of our elements.

If you didn’t notice someone else said the same thing as I just did about unobtainium….people rewrite what other people say to get the point across and someone might do it in a better way. I mean this is how we get better technology…we take ideas that already are around and make them better. Which is exactly what Avatar did…it make a movie that you SHOULD be able to relate to and understand what id happening in the real world.

Also for the person who said try to defend Avatar without talking about the CGI/3D. Well here’s the thing I go and see a lot of movie…and I always pay attention to the CG, because its pretty cool. But when I went to go see Avatar for the first time….didn’t even notice a change until I watched it a second time, didn’t even care compared to the rest of the movie. Like someone said this type of story line has been used a lot, ever since imperialism this type of story has been in soo many book and stories and everything else. If you are all really hating on Avatar only because of the story line then you should be hating on “The Lion King” since that story has been done before that movie.

Also for an fyi James Cameron wrote the story for Avatar before the movie Pocahontas came out. Plus I think it was great with adding the cigarette into the movie so criticizes video gamers. If you watch Avatar with an open mind and not think about all the other movies out there you will agree that it is an amazing movie. And if you don’t like Avatar after what I just said and seeing the movie then I don’t know how you consider yourself human because its pathetic.

The script of Avatar and Pocahontas are very different. But the story isn’t. Stories (or narratives) are often times just a retelling of another narrative, borrowing elements from other stories. I read somewhere that at their base there are only about 30 different stories (some think less around 20, others more around 36).

The point is, the movies aren’t the same, they tell a similar story, but the script, screenplay etc, are not the same.

ohh k….great….now i’ve seen the movie Avatar and I can say that it was good. And I’ve not seen it in a 3D, let alone 3D, the place where I am right now doesn’t even have a good movie theater, so watched it on a laptop and it was not even a very good video quality(thanks to piracy and sorry to all the anti piracy people, but that was the only way). And I think I don’t need to watch Pocahontas now to come to a conclusion because there have been many similar stories- like a spy goes to another place and develops a liking for the people their and tries to defend them from his own people. But the director has taken the whole thing to a new level and Kudos to him for that. Every movie only depicts how good we are and aliens are the bad ones, this has taken a turn in the movie. This is rare, coz in every movie we depict that how we are the greatest in the universe. James Cameron also champions the environmental cause in the movie. He has clearly emphasized on living in harmony with nature- that’s what Pandora people used to do.So all in all I would say that it was still so pleasingly different even after being similar.

I just have to say that after reading this comparison I think the stories have absolutely nothing to do with one another. I think that taking a basic story such as pocahontas with main charactors and villains and compairing it to a basic story like Avatar there are bound to be similarities. Duh. To refrence the changing of the disney version to the avatar Im sorryt but changing the words from growing crops to taming dragons is rediculous. They couldnt be farther apart. Yah basic story telling was used as it always is but Disneys version lacked the spirituality and the depth to be portrayed even remotely in the same light. I think that if John smith was exploring the New World with glowing plants and un tamed animals while riding in a gigantic blue robot that he controls with his quadropaligic mind things may be the same. Kudos for the funny similarities but this story is the same to most stories with a beginning middle and end. I think what you are all forgetting while typing these comments, is the simple message layed out. Humanity has lost all connection with our life force planet earth. Our mother earth is the creator and the giver of life. If you wish to reference anything it would be straight out of our own history. Search “Sumarians” they had this story long before disney and even the bible. What makes it so interesting is the fact that the story mimics the 8 thousand year old clay tablet virsion, with a slight twist. We were the Avatars and they were us. And they came to mine gold for their failing atmosphere. Same exact story right down to the space ships. Actually do some research and see that this story pre dates the bible and is opur oldest written record.

Pocahontas?!

Definitely the most absurd amount of bullshit out there. But then absurdity and lack of foresight/insight got Bush in, didn’t it? Simpletons. Cameron accomplished a lot more than sitting on a website wrestling with jealous-ones-envy. Wake up and try not to be the epitome of ‘stupid human’.

There is absolutely more than one point and many qualities to this movie. It is more indepth and full of the utmost truth and beauty than it is being given credit. Yes many stories are told over and over in different fashion, but hey, if we prefer to convey a message to the adult world through Disney cartoons, well F*** me. Now I am just wasting my time…

I think this whole thing is hilarious, and if you are so desperately in love with this boondoggle of a movie that you can take a pretty well executed joke, you really need a sense of humor.

I saw this epic last night at the Empire Leicester Sq in London, which is a superb venue in which to view this film. Huge screen, excellent sound and an extraordinary Dolby, 3 dimensional image. The whole effect is mind blowing. This is a ‘Must see’ movie, innovative, and extraordinary. I think it will be regarded by most cinema goers as another milestone in the history of the art. The level of realism achieved is remarkable, and although the film is relatively long in real time, it retains it’s excitement and holds the audience’s attention to the end. Performances are good, but this is not the sort of film that dwells on big star value for the actors, although Sigorney Weaver does shine and delivers a very convincing performance, as do the rest of the cast. But as there is so much entertainment and action value on screen the human element does not dominate in the usual way. As Writer/Director, James Cameron deserves high praise for this creation and in my opinion it will break box office records. I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

I could give a shit less that it’s the same plot as Pocahontas. Avatar was way the fuck better and the message of the film needs to be reiterated as many times as possible. It may be a little lazy on the part of James Cameron, but his vision was the final product which was an amazing digitally enhanced fantasy world that many people wish they could actually live in. He also spiced it up with other aspects such as the connection with the planet and the interaction with nature and Eywa. I saw no animals killing the shit out of humans in Pocahontas and not once did I feel the kinds of emotion in Pocahontas that I did in Avatar. It was a way better film than Pocahontas will ever be therefore, it’s all good.

Avatar is one of the greatest movie ever made. To me it doesn’t even remind me of the Disney Movie Pocahontas. I mean everything is diffrent. this is amazing how the picture was perfectly clear and to top it all of it was in 3D. How much better can this get. this movie is great. the wildlife setting, the creatures , floating mountains and don’t forget the fly off your seat action. Jame’s Cameron is the king of Avatar and I congratulate him for all his hard work.
love, Your biggest Fan!!!

James Cameron wrote Avatar in 1994 and Disney’s Pocahontas didn’t come out until late 1995. So which one stole from whom?

Don’t be too quick to judge on something. Pocahontas was a sham. The real story was much more graphic and depressing as was Mulan if you read your history.

Avatar is actually an original idea no matter if he stole it or not. Obviously, if Disney had a problem, which they don’t, with his storyline, then they would have sued him already.

This story actually reminds me of a lot of Native American/White Man movies. Dances With Wolves to name one. Man lives among Natives. Is an outcast until he proves himself. Falls in love with chief’s daughter. All these we know from past movies.

Get off the Disney Tit and start see reality like you should. Disney puts so many sexual subliminal messages in their stories it’s not even funny.

Watch the movie with an open mind and before you watch Pocahontas. Otherwise you will ruin your own experience.

There are many similarities between Pocahontas and Avatar but that doesn’t dispose on either of them as one being worse than the other- or a stolen idea. Humans have had the same ideas and stories for centuries, in fact everything out there is a commix of recycled material so lets not be so easy to judge. I am actually in class right now and one of our assignments is to design a dvd cover for a movie and funnily enough the first two that came to my mind were Pocahontas and Avatar! I love both of them because of their similar ideas and meanings- the wall between the build world and the natural one. The secrets that lie within mother earth that a lot of us our unaware of because of the materialistic curtain that has been pulled over our eyes. In both movies the concepts that are prevalent are actually based on factual elements of the society that we live in. Indigenous people have been at battle for decades with their rights for land being dismissed by mans greed for money- unfortunately in the real world the ending isn’t that happy in comparison to the likes of the movies that we watch. Anyway I am now trailing off from the topic in question so I am just going to end it here. Both movies are great- and are really magical. They truly touched my heart and both whilst having a similar concept are unique in their own ways. We are all telling the same stories in the same world together- the difference being our perceptions! Back to class now!

The effects in Avatar, “so amazing” people say all the time. “The visuals and the story were meant for adults”…and on……

I read earlier that its movies like this that change lives, LIVES. If this movie changed your life then you need to get off the sofa and go outside and start living. Yeah, Get up off mom and dad’s sofa and go live your life. A movie should not change your life, real life experiences should.

Also, I go to see movies for their PLOT! Not for visuals, or effects or any other CGI garbage! I go to a movie for its inventive, well thought out, knowledgeable PLOT! NOT THE EFFECTS!!! Who the hell cares if it looks “cool and neat” if its just another Patriot, Braveheart, Pocahontas, etc… I so am sick of the American public “loving” every movie thrown their way. Dont you people have any sense of culture, art, drama, theatre? And if you think that new plots cant be invented… you dont read much do you!?

If you people would be a LITTLE MORE DISCERNING and not pay for every piece of shit movie released, then some really amazing movies might be made. But as it stands, all Hollywood has to do is take an old story and re-write it and use CGI, and all you idiots will eat it up.

Look! There’s a shiny red ball crossing the interstate; if you can catch it you get to keep it!

Well, go get it. You know you will.
