You have to see this.

civilization elevator“Civilization” is a video installation produced at Crush with New York-based artist and director Marco Brambilla for the elevators of the Standard Hotel in New York City. Unfortunately, the video embed above doesn’t really do it justice. It’s kind of like a modern-day version of Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. I can only imagine watching this as you’re going down an elevator. Hilarious. It’s truly an example of art meeting functionality.

To view a bigger, hi-res version of this detailed short film (running time 2:40), click on the still from Brambilla’s website below the next paragraph.

The video mural depicts a journey from Hell to Heaven interpreted through modern film language using computer-enhanced found footage. This epic video mural contains over 300 individual channels of looped video blended into a multi-layered seamless tableau of interconnecting images that illustrate a contemporary, satirical take on the concepts of Heaven and Hell. Pictures of the installation and a Q&A with Brambilla are here.
