Simon Williams

The film is not good. There is very little good within it. It is not, however, bad. It does not have enough of substance to reach bad. It is uninterested in bad. It transcends this simple human binary. It is merely desolation. It is flavorless gum. It is an empty cardboard box. It is absence in the shape of a film.

Black Panther is a massive, grandiose, deep film with tons to talk about and handles most of its ideas with quite a lot of grace. It is also about 45 minutes too short to give a lot of those ideas the time they need to be fully explored and okay I said it. There, you happy?

Call Me By Your Name is a magnificent, magical bit of hypnosis, entranced by the dripping water of drying swim trunks or the meanings of lingering fingers on one’s lips, and you should see it.

For my money The Post is the biggest waste of potential of the year and the new ultimate signifier of how much Spielberg has fallen as an artist. Never before has it been so obvious that his teeth have just dulled. This film make Ken Burns seem edgy and political, and this is the EXACT WRONG MOMENT TO BE DOING THAT.

Simon is only too happy to admit that The Last Jedi is everything he has ever wanted from a Star Wars film.

Instead of doing a rundown of the flaws of this superhero movie Simon would rather transcribe a story, to the best of his ability, as he is sure it all happened.

The Florida Project, Sean Baker’s new, funny, thoughtful, poignant and beautiful film is a realist fairy tale, a gorgeous 35mm technical experiment, a heartbreaking character drama and a staggering documentation of the many possible meanings of the word “bitch”.

Very different kind of article this time round. Let’s have a serious discussion on mental illness.

‘Wonder Woman’ is good but not for the reasons you think it is.

Why do I do this? Why do I spend this much time and mental energy on this fruitless task? Why doesn’t my mother look me in the eye anymore? I don’t know! Let’s talk 2016!

Normally I write my reviews immediately after seeing the film, but with ‘La La Land’ I did no such thing. After a month, how does it hold up?

Animated film ‘Miss Hokusai’ is a contemplative, rather Zen experience.

‘Suicide Squad’ basically made Simon lose his mind.

For awhile after seeing ‘Lights Out’ I wondered if my enjoyment of the film was for not entirely respectable reasons, if I enjoyed it for reasons closer to that of an MST3K film than that of a truly solid genre effort. But you know what? If something is fun I’m gonna tell the world it’s fun, and dammit this film is fun.

I enjoyed The Music of Strangers quite a lot. It’s no masterpiece, nor necessarily worth multiple viewings, but it’s a strong effort from a fine documentarian.
