Movie Review: Catfish

by Eric Melin on September 23, 2010

in Print Reviews

One of the reasons that “Catfish” succeeds so well as a “reality thriller” is that it abandons the typical documentary style for a first-person as-it-happens feel that’s actually closer to a fictional film.

For 1 Year, 100 Movies, contributor/filmmaker Trey Hock is watching all of AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Movies list (compiled in 2007) in one year. His reactions to each film are recorded here twice a week until the year (and list) is up! Whenever we speak of any list of the great movies, that list is […]

As anyone who’s seen it can attest, 1987’s “Over The Top” is without a doubt the worst movie in Sylvester Stallone’s career–a career, mind you, that includes “Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot” and “Judge Dredd.” After the surprising success and critical acclaim of “Rocky” and the decision to turn the seemingly one-off story into […]

Thursday marks the beginning of Fantastic Fest, now in its sixth year. Held in Austin, the film festival is eight days of the best genre filmmaking has to offer. While it also has hosted some higher profile films such as “There Will Be Blood,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,” and “Zombieland,” the importance of Fantastic Fest is that […]

Here’s my video review of Ben Affleck‘s “The Town” from KTKA-49. Like his directorial debut “Gone Baby Gone” from three years ago, Ben Affleck’s newest movie “The Town” is a crime drama set in his hometown of Boston. More specifically, the Charlestown neighborhood—which has more bank robberies per capita than any other place in the […]

With the release of “I’m Still Here,” the mockumentary has officially come full circle. Actors have already played roles in documentary-style comedies (“This is Spinal Tap,” “Best in Show”), they’ve combined that format with real-life pranks (“Borat,” “Bruno”), and they’ve played fictional versions of themselves for laughs (“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Extras”). This time the performance […]

Movie Review: Easy A

by Vincent Scarpa on September 17, 2010

I must confess that when I first saw the trailer for “Easy A,” the literature nerd in me was thrilled. A teen comedy that takes on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter”? So down. I didn’t expect much of the movie—by which I mean I went in with no expectations of greatness—and while I don’t think […]

Today’s entry has the dubious honor of being the first movie I had to watch in two parts and in the process of doing so, I learned what element of a bad movie topples my threshold. I have seen worse movies during my run on Insomniac Movie Theater, but none of them so far were […]

This is a new column that I pitched to Eric a few weeks ago, basically because I have a lot of pent-up frustration about award shows. Thank you Eric for letting me “freelance” while all I’m really doing is venting. Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, 2009 WINNER: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) […]

Secret scenes or hidden shots in “Paranormal Activity 2” trailer – Look closely! What is the easter egg (or secret frame) in the trailer for “Paranormal Activity 2”? Well, the trailer for the film (a sequel to last year’s surprise low-budget hit) just hit today and the secret shots are only viewable in the trailer […]
